Textured Type

In Digital Media 1 the students need to learn the software programs. My class starts with scanning and Adobe Photoshop. I asked the students to make type making use of textures that you wouldn't be able to create directly in the computer.

Potato Posters

Last Thursday I asked the students to bring three large potatoes and a cutting knife to class.

They have a tendency to be very literal with their concepts and imagery. I thought this medium would help them make simple patterns and compositions. These are the results.

Making the Grade

It's mid semester, so I asked my students to write their own evaluations. I told them they could suggest a grade for themselves as well. Above is one of the responses I got from a Design 1 student.

Everyday Type

I asked the students to make type out of everyday materials. Such as paper cups, toilet paper or a flash light. I told them to work large scale. They used digital cameras to document their work. One group of students chose to combine the element. They used toilet paper, hair mousse, and fire.

Attendance

I got bored with staring at little grids and checking off names. So I designed this attendance sheet for my students.

Design is Readymade

I asked my Design 1 students to create a typeface using photos of type that exists on the street.

Intro to Design

Above are an examples of student work from the 1st assignment in Design 1. I asked them to graphically interpret 18 topics using only black lines.
